Stacey Rhodes, Sales Account Manager at Cooper Coated Coil (CCC) took part in the recent Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Weston Park near Shifnal in Staffordshire, raising £1,202 from friends, family and work colleagues at CCC.
Stacey, who lives in Willenhall, raised over £200 of her total amount through sponsorship from colleagues at CCC. The directors at CCC then doubled this to just over £400.
The ten kilometre race, sponsored by Tesco, was held on Saturday 23rd July as part of a weekend of events to raise awareness of breast cancer in women. Over 3,000 people took part in ten and five kilometre races over the weekend, just one of 300 similar events being held across the UK. It is the second year running that Weston Park has hosted the event.
The national Race for Life event began in 1994 and since then over five million women have raised over £362 million for Cancer Research UK, who state that someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes. Sponsorship money is still coming in, and the organisation hopes that the Weston Park event will hit its fundraising target of £485,000.
Stacey completed the race, her first, in one hour 28 minutes. She was inspired to take part after her uncle John died from bowel cancer in January this year.
“I prepared for the run by training at the gym three times a week”, says Stacey. “When I had built my stamina up, I began running along local roads to get used to pavements and to increase my distance, and took the opportunity of a holiday in the Lake District to really push myself.
“It was an emotional experience and quite overwhelming. There was such a great atmosphere at Weston Park and I hadn’t thought about the fun aspect of what I was doing, like meeting with other runners and having a great time. I’ll definitely do it again”.
CCC is based on the Planetary Industrial Estate in Wolverhampton. Kevin Tranter, managing director at CCC said; “I’m delighted with Stacey’s achievement. She joined CCC just after Christmas and has recently become a member of our Charity and Social Committee.
“We try to promote good practice in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and encourage our employees to get involved. It’s very important that companies such as CCC have a strong sense of CSR – we are relatively new in name to this area and are reliant on the local community for our workforce, so it’s good to be able to give something back. Through the Charity and Social Committee, we encourage our employees to let us know of deserving causes, and to come up with ideas on how we can support them.
“Having a happy workforce is vital to good performance, so it’s important to us that they know we are keen to support them in return.”
